Kizhi the gemstone of Russian wood architecture: Orthodox Churches Series in Karelia Russia
 Andrew Karasev
Kizhi is the masterpiece of Russian arbor architecture of 18th and 19th centuries. It is simply gorgeous, please see photo illustrations.
Karelia is Finnish speaking Russian province (however the majority of people there do not speak longer Finnish, and Karelians, who does, they more likely live in Sortavala, not in Kem). Kizhi begins its history with Novgorod republic, where it was baptisized in Greek Orthodox Christianity
Pogost Kizhski is actually original place where 22 heads church was built in 18th century. Karelia had abundant wood supply and due to harsh climate it is was not practical back to 17th through 19th centuries to build brick buildings there
Kizhi as wood architecture museum. Besides original two churches: winter and summer, Kizhi is the place where neighboring wooden chapels were moved and reassembled. So, we recommend you to take excursion on the island of Kizhi and review the open air outdoor museum exposition
Other northern gems. Please, explore also Archangelsk, Kargopol and Kem cities to visit and familiarize with Russian northern architecture
