Down To The Wire  Denver, CO

The Colorado Avalanche came up with a huge win on Friday night with the help of some young legs. Marek Svatos made his return to the Avalanche after missing nearly the entire season with an injury. His 2 clutch goals helped the team to a much needed victory. The energetic play of other young players also seemed to put a jump in the Avs skates. Despite the big win for the Avalanche, they are in desperate need of assistance if they are to secure the division title for the tenth straight time.

Svatos, a rookie forward from Czechoslovakia, had a remarkable game. After a terrific training camp he had unexpectedly made the club's final roster. Things turned a bit sour for the young winger as he suffered a serious shoulder injury in only his second game. The injury required shoulder surgery that put him out nearly the entire season. He had a chance to get a couple of games under his belt by returning to the Avalanche lineup with only two games to go in the regular season. It seems the 21 year old has a knack for scoring though. He scored his first and second career goals in his return to the lineup.

Svatos' goals combined with the quick skating of speedy forward Dan Hinote seemed to energize an otherwise sluggish offense. The jump in the skates of star Avs forwards Milan Hejduk, Peter Forsberg and Paul Kariya was evident. It appears that the play of the younger guys was a big boost for the team, who needed a win to stay in the race for the division.

The Colorado Avalanche have won the division title an NHL record nine consecutive years. Last year they pulled the division away from the Vancouver Canucks on the final game of the season. It appears they will need an equal amount of magic this year. With only one game remaining, at home against Nashville on Sunday, Colorado is tied with Vancouver at 99 points. The Canucks own the tie breaker by having the most victories. Vancouver wraps up their season against the Edmonton Oilers tonight. The Avalanche will need a victory on Sunday combined with either an Oiler win or tie if they hope to keep the division title.

It was only a month ago when the Avs appeared to have the division locked up. They were even in the running for the best record in the Western Conference and possibly the best record in the league. A horrific March skid ended those hopes however. After winning in Phoenix 4-1 on March 14th, they went 1-6-1 in their next 8 games. The Avs have now slipped into a precarious position in the division.

Sunday should prove to be an exciting finale to the season. In addition to the allure of the Colorado/Vancouver situation, there are numerous other appealing races coming down to the wire. Over in the Eastern Conference there are 4 teams with between 100-102 points. They are jockeying between the second and fifth playoff spots in the conference. At the bottom of the Western Conference there are 3 teams tied at 89 points with only the final 2 playoff spots available. One of those teams is the Edmonton Oilers. Clearly they will have a lot to play for when they match up with the Canucks Saturday night.

The Avalanche will know what awaits them before their game. The Oiler/Canuck game won't mean anything if the Avalanche lose. Colorado needs to take care of their own business against Nashville on Sunday. Fortunately for the Avalanche, they have assured themselves both a playoff spot and at the least will remain in fourth position in the conference. We will find out the details when the ice is primed on Sunday.
