BUSH: FREEDOM’S CHAMPION IN CHINESE
BUSH: FREEDOM’S CHAMPION IN CHINESE

J. Grant Swank, Jr.

US President George W. Bush breathes freedom. The Democrats don’t believe that. Some turncoat Republicans don’t believe that, one of them being my own Maine’s Olympia Snowe. However, those who can hear freedom’s lyrics with a genuine heart know that Mr. Bush does indeed live for one primary mission — sharing freedoms wherever possible.

Therefore, when speaking to the opposition, that is, the Chinese communists, he gives forth the same gospel message regarding personal liberties as he does anywhere. That makes him a sincere believer. And that underlines the motives by which the leader of the most powerful nation works his agenda.

One of the shames of the Bush administration years has nothing to do with Mr. Bush. It has to do with citizens in his own country who don’t see the patriotic mission of sharing freedom as he sees it.
>
How much more powerful could the President’s impact be upon every corner of the planet if only the entire free nation known as the “United States of America” stood alongside a liberty-endorsing President. But, I suppose, that is too much to ask for considering a bankrupt Democrat Party, bereft of life and purpose. After all, the killing party known as Democrats has no idea, sadly, of what life, let alone freedom life, truly is and can mean to the despotic governed elsewhere.

Therefore, when Mr. Bush speaks to the Chinese he points to a liberty-based country like Taiwan. With that, the President states quite clearly to the Chinese communists, leaders seated within arms’ length: “’Modern Taiwan is free and democratic and prosperous. By embracing freedom at all levels, Taiwan has delivered prosperity to its people and created a free and democratic Chinese society.’”

As AP’s Terence Hunt reports: “President Bush prodded China on Wednesday to grant more political freedom to its 1.3 billion people and held up archrival Taiwan as a society that successfully moved from repression to democracy as it opened its economy.”

Our President is a man of moral conviction. He is a giving person. He is interested in using the powerful country’s might to aid others. He lives out the Christian morality his faith has embraced. And with that, the United States can be justly proud.

“Seeking to solidify America's influence in Asia in the face of China's rising economy and military might, Bush said Beijing's economic growth must be accompanied by more freedoms for its people.

"’As China reforms its economy,’ the president said, ‘its leaders are finding that once the door to freedom is opened even a crack, it cannot be closed. As the people of China grow in prosperity, their demands for political freedom will grow as well.’"

With an address like that, Americans should be heard cheering from shore to shore. The newspapers in America should be congratulating the President on the front pages. The evening telecasts should be providing exemplary detail.

Instead, this evening’s three major evening news reports downgraded the President regarding the vote in the Senate. It was one of the messiest news coverages I have been forced to take in in months. One report made the President out to be beaten down to a pulp with the Democrats calling the shots on New Iraq troop withdrawal. Another report pointed the finger at Mr. Bush as if he had been scolded soundly by his own Congress.

There was slight mention that the Democrats did not actually get all that they wanted by way of slapping Mr. Bush’s hands concerning New Iraq multi-national troops and America’s part in that force. There was a smidgen of mention that the Republicans gained the upper hand in the final copy of what was passed in today’s Senate meeting.

And so it went for this evening’s utterly biased reportage on Mr. Bush. I don’t recall much of anything said about his freedom stance in the Far East. And that of course is quite sad, considering the freedom breezes that the Democrats and liberal press take in every morning upon awakening. Talk about thankless hearts among us.

“Bush also lectured China about opening its economy to foreign competition to narrow the expected $200 billion trade surplus with the United States. ‘China needs to provide a level playing field for American businesses seeking access to China's market,’ Bush said. Further, he said China must fulfill its promise to move toward a more market-based currency. “

Was that pro-American mentioning reported in this evening’s telecasts? I don’t think so. At least I missed it if it were pronounced. Instead, it was bash Bush, slash Bush, and hit him hard again. And this is the land of the free. And this is the Democrat Party that promised last November to “reach across the aisle” for the good of the nation.

Nevertheless, those of us who have learned to withstand the onslaughts from the liberals, we continue to champion our President. We know that he was correct in setting forth Operation Iraqi Freedom, the three-week-win war that has led to the Iraqi free elections, the Iraqi constitution and now the building of a democracy, the latter facing some of the severest odds any new nation could face.

"’I have pointed out that the people of China want more freedom to express themselves ... to worship without state control ... and to print Bibles and other sacred texts without state control,’ Bush said.

With that pronounced, was there any congratulations forthcoming from the theologically liberal National Council of Churches? Was there any word of encouragement from the theologically liberal church leaders throughout America? Was there any pat on the presidential back from the grassroots believers?

If the latter was missing, no doubt it was because the grassroots genuine believers heard nothing about Mr. Bush’s statement regarding freedom of religion.

And so it goes.
