AMERICA’S OPPORTUNITY FOR SHARING THE GOOD  AMERICA’S OPPORTUNITY FOR SHARING THE GOOD

J. Grant Swank, Jr.

The Bush administration is offering the world what it has never had offered before. Under United States President George W. Bush, America has dealt with its own safety. It has confronted natural calamities. It has continued to buoy up its spirits with patriotic fervor and admirable acts of kindness.

But probably the most obvious and yet least noted grand opportunity has been America’s establishing freedom basses wherever possible. It is sad that Democrats have taken this opportunity for good and turned it into a bad slam against Mr. Bush and team. However, that’s reality in American dirty politics. Nevertheless, when those of optimistic mind look far above the common harangues of the political dwarfs, they see a country that is worth praising and a nation moving forward with a happy heart.
>
That’s the America we all like to picture. And that’s the America that we have been breathing in since Operation Iraqi Freedom. Too bad that so much damaging rhetoric from the likes of Ted Kennedy, John Kerry and Nancy Pelosi have dirtied history’s window. But then again, all that is to be expected from the low-brows of such characters who simply can’t seem to get the genuine patriotic agenda.

So it is that when Americans will look back upon the Bush commitment, those future generations will marvel at freedom planted in New Iraq. They will take in with wonder the freedoms set forth in Afghanistan. And they will delight in reading detail of other nations seeking the same democracy base that the United States has thoroughly enjoyed for decades.

That’s why when I listen to Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai speak to attendees at a conference in Austria, I cannot but help feel for the man. I want to reach and touch his hand. I want to send him a message of encouragement.

What he told those gathered about him was his thanks for what the US-led Coalition has done for his citizens, how his own people have glimpsed a new sun shining down upon their futures. And then he pointed to the reality confronting his leadership, that is, the fact that his people simply cannot be left stranded without outside help. In other words, those screaming, including US Democrats, for multinational troops pull outs must not be listened to.

As I heard Karzai’s voice echoing across the continents, I heard a man speaking truth. He was also pleading for sanity among friends. He was further appealing for trust to continue. He has the right to fear betrayal for betrayal has long been the dark side of human relationships. So Karzai speaks for his own when he asks the freedom-based nations not to renege; instead, he asks them to maintain integrity by staying on course for the lives of his people.

They are in villages. They are in mountains. They are in rural areas. They are clustered in towns and vales and wayside stations. They are his own. They look up to him. And with that, he looks out to friends who have supported a democracy planting, praying and asking them not leave him stranded but stand by him through thick and thin.

America is at its best when it responds with a resounding Yes to such appeals. America will always be a blessed nation when it sacrifices for the good of others. America will be at its noblest when it puts aside the temptation to be self-contained and continue to share bread with the hungry.

Jesus said it best: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” He should know. He gave His life upon the cross for our salvation. Then those who follow Him likewise seek to give so that others can live the good life.

VOA’s Marlene Smith reports: “President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan says domestic security forces are too weak on their own to fight the continuing threat of suicide bombers and terrorism. Mr. Karzai was on an official visit to Austria where he attended a conference on Islam.

“U.S-backed President Hamid Karzai told reporters his country needed continued economic help and international troops.

"’Afghanistan will need the presence of the international community until Afghanistan develops its own capability, its own institutions, of the army of the police and other relevant institution,’ said Hamid Karzai.

“The president said the Taleban continues to work with al-Qaida and terrorism is a threat that could be defeated by democracy.

"’But terrorism will remain to affect us, will remain to attack us for much more time to come,’ continued Afghanistan's president. ‘What is important for us now is to continue to strengthen the institutions, to continue to democratize the country.’"

What an American honor to be a part of the Karzai team for goodness’ sake.
