IS US ‘GREAT SATAN’ RELIEVING POVERTY, PAIN?  J. Grant Swank, Jr.

Muslims have been taught that America is "The Great Satan." If that is so, the devil has been up to some godlike good these days.

Witness for example the news from the US Central Command office focusing on humanitarian projects overseen by American personnel. It will underline that the United States is not devilish but instead one of the most caring nations on the planet.

The Civil Affairs Team (CAT) has just completed an assessment of medical needs in Ta’izz, Yemen, according to Sgt. Brian E. McElaney, US Marine. It will all lead to a healthier life for everyone coming in contact with this outreach endeavor.

The list has been completed. It includes monitoring equipment, a scale for weighing infants, and vitamins as well as other small supplies for the remote clinic. This office will equip those living in the mountainside village around Taiz. The team medic for CAT 624 is Army Sgt. 1st Class Perales. Proud of doing something practical for the citizenry, the sergeant keeps on keeping on.

It is expected that the clinic, now pressed by demands, will enlarge. It cares for villagers within a 9 mile radius. The Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa has already seen through a $203,000 renovations program.

And all this is because America cares—truly cares.

In Baghdad, Iraq, four potable water systems have been completed. That means that 31,000 human beings will benefit. And it’s all due to American personnel doing their best to plant a democracy where once a dictator fed mortals headfirst into shredding machines.

No, America is not "The Great Satan." Because of America’s Judeo-Christian heritage, the nation seeks to help. In other words the country has been known for its Good Samaritan mindset that yields down-to-earth results to help others.

According to LTC Stan Heath of the Guir Region Division / US Army Corps of Engineers, 31,000 Iraqis will be thankful for the four potable water supplies. These plants and the installing of deep wells, pumps and distribution networks are there, in place, due to those men and women of the armed services who labor for Iraqi freedoms.

Twenty-five thousand residents in Ninewa will have water. Water, a basic, is not an option. It is a necessity. And those living in that region now appreciate having the fundamental that they have longed for—good water. The "200 cubic meter per hour potable water treatment plant with reverse osmosis will supply potable water to 6,000 people living in the Basrah area. The treatment plan is estimated to be completed in April 2006."

So the work goes on. And the people are encouraged because others see the problem and provide the solution.

Further, the Combined Join Task Force HOA has labored against polio in the region. The polio epidemic broke out. It was discovered in Ethiopia, Sudan, Yemen and Eritrea. Immediately, Djiboutian officialdom set in place a program to prevent the deadly illness from spreading far and wide.

"Ismail Omar Guelleh, the President of Djibouti, declared a state of emergency for Djibouti earlier in the year. Through the U.S. Embassy, the Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa were requested for immediate humanitarian assistance.

"CJTF-HOA, along with the World Health Organization and the United States Agency for International Development, assisted the Djiboutian government in implementing a polio prevention campaign from May through September."

America: "The Great Satan"? Not so. The Great Humanitarian? Yes.

That’s the message that America gives around the globe. Does the world thank America? Sometimes. Does the world at times ignore the American kindness? Yes. But the Judeo-Christian backdrop to America’s history continues to yield its own fruit of goodness and kindness. That’s what America is about.

Sometimes Americans are greedy and self-contained. We have our share of those egocentric, materialistic citizens who care only for themselves. But it is an historical fact that when crises hit elsewhere, scores of Americans with the heart reach out to help—immediately and in large measure.

Still another evidence of America the Humanitarian Nation is what is going on in Afghanistan through the Public Affairs Office in Kabul, according to ILT Leslie Brown.

Proudly cadets at the National Military Academy of Afghanistan began their second semester. There are now 97 students enrolled. This is particularly encouraging to the democracy in process.

"’We are much more prepared this semester,’ said ANA Maj. Gen. Mohammad Sharif, the NMAA’s commanding general. The academy, which is modeled after the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, made history when it opened its doors to the first class of Afghan National Army cadets in March 2005."

Further, in Kirkuk Province, Iraq, the 116th Brigade Combat Team is hard at work. The team is putting in place "vital services with the goal of improving the quality of life for families" there.

The team analyzes thoroughly towns, village and city neighborhoods to find out what is basically needed for a healthy daily lifestyle. Reports are then submitted by the civil affairs soldier in charge. Then a conclave gathers to cull the detail and conclude programs imperative.

The scope ranges from helping schools to delivering supplies to those in need. In particular, educational institutions are focused on.

"The civil affairs soldiers are often the recipients of numerous school supply packages, either donated from their own family members and friends or from organizations that work with the U.S. military in supplying large-scale school supply packages."

America and its armed forces do more than combat. They construct. And for that we sensitive and thankful Americans are most appreciative.
