CAN BARBARA WALTERS TURN SAUDIS AROUND?  J. Grant Swank, Jr.

Barbara Walters interviews King Abdullah, new Saudi Arabian monarch. Woman to man. Women don’t have such rights in that country. Yet the 82-year-old king is talking with a Western dressed, speaking female. What will the Muslim traditionalists think of that?

Whatever they think, the king will view America’s "20/20" and "Nightline" on his own wall-to-wall television layout by which he constantly surveys global news.

Muslim women are not worth much in Islam. They may be killed by Muslim males if they are accused of defaming the family. It is called "honor killing" by which a male may slit her throat or put a bullet in her head. Women are totally amenable to the males in their society. The king’s nation is one of the most legalistic Islamic countries on the planet.

"Without a man's permission, women are not permitted to drive, attend university, or even have lifesaving surgery. And in the country's first-ever elections in 2004, women were denied the right to vote. ‘I believe the day will come when women drive,’ the king said. ‘In fact, if you look at the areas in Saudi Arabia, the deserts and in the rural areas, you will find that women do drive. ...’"

He talked to Barbara Walters and assured her that things are going to change in his nation. At the same time, he cannot disturb the legalists who would become increasingly irate if the king went too far with freedoms. He has to walk the fine line between the traditional cruelty leveled against women, for instance, and the rest of the free world coming into equality for both genders.

Further, he does not want any of his country persons kissing his hand when they meet him. He says he abhors that. Moreover, he held US President George W. Bush’s hand when visiting him. Holding hands between men is a sign of genuine friendship in the king’s country.

According to ABC News Internet Ventures, the king is tackling the Muslim murderers global and wants to put an end to their slaughter. At the same time, he has a nation filled with Muslim murderers global, either with guns ready or a mindset committed to the slaying of non-Muslims — the "infidels."

"The real treasure and binding tie in U.S.-Saudi relations is oil. The kingdom controls roughly one-quarter of the world's oil supply.

"With the price of crude nearly tripling over the past decade, Abdullah is keenly aware of the impact this has had on global markets and politics, and says his country – the world's leading oil exporter – is working to slow the rapid rise in oil prices. Abdullah said Saudi Arabian oil production has risen to more than 10 million barrels a day to address increasing demand.

Concerning Islamic killers international, the king called it "’madness and evil. It is the work of the devil. I believe that the world must stand shoulder to shoulder with each other if we are to eliminate this evil from our midst.’"
