MAYOR NAGIN: REBUILD SIN CITY ON CASINOS  J. Grant Swank, Jr.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin didn’t get it. He lost his city twice in a couple blinks of an eye.

Now he wants to rebuild his metro on gambling sin. Any reasonable person knows how addictive gambling is, barring the gambling enthusiasts who consider such a statement loony.

But putting the unreal criticisms aside, rebuilding New Orleans on casinos is not the moral base that a ruined city should hope for. The casinos will drag in the same wicked elements that cut New Orleans into not just the "Big Easy," but the name it was originally known by — "Sin City."

New Orleans was not called "Sin City" because of its culture and gorgeous homes and parks and church-goers. It was called that because it was loaded with evil.

Again, the bragging sinners don’t like that kind of talk; but there are those believers in this nation who call sin "sin" and don’t really care about the politically correctness of those who disagree.

So now Nagin sports a call to casino enterprises to erect their cash flow in its waterbeds, according to Matt Daily of Reuters.

Casinos would sprout from the stinking waters near the "historic French Quarter," known particularly for its nude displays and out-in-out front sexual activity. So that’s what Nagin has learned from the disaster, namely, that to rebuild a city one puts up structures given to "Sin City’s" past instead of seeking to construct a moral foundation for its citizens.

Jesus spoke about building a house on sand. It eventually falls. Then he spoke about building a house on a rock. It withstands winds and waters — in other words, it remains. Obviously, Nagin is not familiar with that portion of the New Testament. It would help if he read it and heeded it.

"New Orleans is struggling to rebound from Hurricane Katrina in August which fractured flood walls and flooded 80 percent of the city. Hurricane Rita hit the Gulf Coast on September 24, triggering renewed flooding in parts of the city.

"Under Nagin's proposal, a U-shaped section encompassing several blocks of the city's downtown area would allow large hotels to covert part of their property into Las Vegas-style casinos. Only one casino is currently operating in that area, and Nagin said as many as seven new gambling operations could open.

"That existing casino, Harrah's, has stirred bitter political battles and suffered from financial problems in recent years. Nagin said he had approached Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco about the plan and offered to split the tax revenues, a figure he said could approach the $150 million neighboring Mississippi received annually," Reuters reports.

Some people just can’t learn a lesson when it’s splashed in their faces.
