"‘One-hundred percent of dogs will be susceptible,’ said Edward Dubovi, director of the animal virology lab at Cornell University. ‘I would expect to see this infection moving through groups of dogs until a large percentage gets infected and there are a lot of immune dogs.’"

While the world is concerned about avian flu leveling a potential 1 billion humans, dog flu moves steadily across America.
We’ve got hurricanes and floods and earthquakes. Now there’s canine flu threat, according to AP’s Jim Fitzgerald.
"A new canine influenza, or dog flu, is spreading steadily through the nation's dogs, and experts say there is no vaccine available to curb the virus that has killed young and otherwise healthy animals."

"’We knew we were dealing with something more serious,’ said Deborah Bennetts, spokeswoman for the Best Friends chain, based in Norwalk, Conn. ‘It seemed to be spreading and some dogs were getting seriously ill.’ Tests on the dogs confirmed the new virus."

Kennels are turning away infected dogs, including those that have been at dog shows or give any indication of sickness.

Greyhounds at racetracks evidenced the virus first in 11 states. Dogs from New Jersey to California have come down with the illness. To date, no one knows how many canines have died from it.

Dog owners, scared by the recent occurrences, are now keeping their pets indoors. That is, they don’t let them go to the parks, to dog fairs, even outside to the sidewalks. The best policy is keeping the dogs inside until this whole epidemic subsides.

"That has resulted in a lot of lonely dogs, as pet owners keep them home to avoid the flu," Fitzgerald reports.

The dogs do not give evidence of the flu with alarming initial signs. In fact, owners may conclude that the pet simply has "the common dog cold." It’s known as "kennel cough."

It is reported that the dog flu crossed over from horses.

"’He was extremely lethargic, having a hard time breathing,’ said Margaret Ragi of Upper Saddle River, N.J., whose dog Curry, a bichon frise, was one sick puppy a month ago. ‘The life just wasn't there in his eyes. We were really worried.’"

Thus far, canines reported officially as having the flu are located in Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, California, Oregon, North Carolina and Washington state
