John & Becky's Movie Review Of "The Day After Tomorrow"  Becky and I saw the big screen film "The Day After Tomorrow" on Sunday night with my parents. The "Day After Tomorrow" website can be found at http://www.thedayaftertomorrow.com/ and is available in a variety of languages. The site gives you an appreciation for how the Internet is becoming more sophisticated in its ability to attract visitors and keep their interest.

The Fandango website - http://www.fandango.com/movie_page.asp?mv=84175&aff=&source=fr3_t describes the movie as follows:

The Story
What if we are on the brink of a new Ice Age? Climatologist Jack Hall's (Dennis Quaid) research indicates that global warming could trigger an abrupt and catastrophic shift in the planet's climate. The ice cores that he's drilled in Antarctica show that it happened before, ten thousand years ago. And now he's warning officials that it could happen again if they don't act soon. But his warning comes too late.

The Review
If you liked Independence Day and the special effects of big theatrical movies then you should like "The Day After Tomorrow". It has great special effects, from giant waves crashing into the Statue of Liberty and wiping out New York City, to tornados leveling Los Angeles, and a mammoth blizzard that freezes everything in its path bringing on a new ice age. However, the special effects cannot save this movie from its own destruction with a lousy script and too much political posturing.

At two hours and four minutes, Becky thought it was way too long. There are so many characters that it's difficult to get emotionally attached to any of them. Millions of people get wiped out in this film across the planet and nobody seems to care. The movie was far too political, trying to drive home the global warming problem without offering any solution. Other than to bash what was clearly the Republican administration as being the masters of evil and clearly at fault for the destruction of all mankind. By the end of the movie, the third-world comes to save the day and the people living in the Southern half of the United States are forced to immigrate to Mexico in order to escape the next ice age.

Wait there’s more. Several of the highlights of this movie for me didn’t come from the film, but from the audience. There was this part in the movie where this young girl is going to need an antibiotic or a shot of penicillin in order to save her leg, otherwise they are going to have to ________ …(at this point in the movie, the actors all look at each other and nobody says what the third alternative is) when suddenly from the middle of the theater comes the answer “Amputate!”. Hey, give that guy in the middle row a bag of M&M’s for getting the right answer. Did he forget he was in a movie and suddenly think he was at home watching, “Who wants to be a Millionaire?”. Experiences like this remind me why I love going to the movies.

If that wasn’t enough, the best part came when this teenager behind me finishes up his large soda, leans forward in his seat about six inches from my ear, removes the lid from his cup, starts shaking the ice around as he pours it into his mouth and starts chewing the ice. All I could think of was that Donkey on Shrek 2 leaning forward and making that popping sound in Shrek’s ear. It was really quite humorous because this kid was so taken in by the special effects of this movie that he didn’t have a clue how annoying he really was. I turned around and looked at him and his Dad sitting next to him as he chomped away and they were both glued to the screen. So, there definitely is a group of people out there that will love this film.

In the end, my Mom liked it the best and thought it was worth the trip and the rest of us would recommend waiting for the rental.
