The Story
Joaquin Phoenix stars as a fire fighter caught in a fire that's likely to kill him. As he waits for rescue from his company, Ladder 49, he thinks back on his life, career and marriage. John Travolta co-stars as the fire chief and father figure who's trying to reach him.

The Review
I had low expectations for "Ladder 49" going into it. Becky really wanted to see this movie. I was skeptical about a fire fighter flick since I figured it would be another "Backdraft", which didn't do much for me back in the early 90's. Once again, Becky was right and I was wrong because this film delivered.

Ladder 49 will take you on a journey into the world of fire fighters and make you thankful for the brave souls who put their lives on the line on behalf of others. Several times in the movie the question is asked "What drives a fire fighter to run into a burning building when other people are running out?" This question is answered loud and clear in Ladder 49. It reminded me of the courage of fire fighters and police officers that was witnessed by the world during the tragedy of September 11th.

Ladder 49 is about the life of Fire Fighter Jack Morrison (Joaquin Phoenix), which is viewed in real-time and through a series of flashbacks. Jack joins a Baltimore firehouse run by Chief Mike Kennedy (John Travolta) who becomes Jack's mentor as he seeks to become a great fireman. He works his way from being the lead guy on the hose to search and rescue where he saves victims from the clutches of certain death.

Most of the action and tension in this movie comes from the heat and drama of the variety of fires that are fought by the team of Ladder 49. However, we also experienced the frustration of Jack's wife and kids as they wondered if their Dad was going to come home from his latest shift. Throughout the film, Jack is at the bottom of a twelve-story building waiting to be saved by his team of fire fighters. The suspense continued to build as we waited to find out if Jack would make it out of the burning building he was trapped within.
