John & Becky's Movie Review Of "Mr. 3000"  Becky and I saw the new comedy "Mr. 3000" last week. The official "Mr. 3000" website can be viewed at http://mr3000.movies.go.com/ and has more details about the film and gives you the feel of the egotistical character in the movie.

The IMDb website can be found at the following link - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0339412/plotsummary
and describes the story as follows:

The Story
Stan Ross was a baseball superstar who turned his back on the game years ago when he finally hit 3,000 hits. Years later, he's now a successful, self-made entrepreneur whose many businesses revolve around his title: Mr. 3000. But a clerical error has proven that Stan is just short three hits of his spectacular homerun record. Now, with time on his side and the potential to be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame, Stan must return back to the game and get back his title. But things have changed with age, and as Stan finds out, it's not too easy to get back into the game when he hasn't played for years, and he's nearing 50.

The Review
Stan Ross (Bernie Mac) is a baseball superstar who plays for the Milwaukee Brewers and is only interested in getting 3,000 hits, so he can get into the Hall of Fame. Mr. 3,000 is 100% pure ego and all about Stan Ross. Nine years after leaving baseball, it's reported that "Ross the Boss" is three hits shy of getting into the Hall of Fame with an actual hit total of 2,997. Stan's ego is too big to let that go, so he decides to go back and swing for the fences at the age of 47 to reclaim his legacy.

This is a pretty funny movie as Stan goes about trying to compete with younger players and struggles to check his ego at the door. Bernie Mac is a funny guy and makes this movie. The Directing of the film was far too shallow for Bernie's talent. You only meet a few players on the team, you barely see Stan play ball other than a few catches at first base and the Brewers apparently only had one pitcher from Japan who had problems swearing in English.

It has a good message for today's high priced and overpaid athletes. Baseball has lost a great deal of the younger generation today to individual sports like those found in the X Games and they probably need more movies like this to gain interest again. Stan Ross does a commercial in the movie where he boasts about not signing autographs. He is so over-the-top that when he hits his 3,000th at bat he takes the ball away from a kid in the stands. It was really a funny scene, but it's also the message of the movie. Lose the fans and take a team sport down to being all about the individual and you lose the thrill of the game.

Too much of the film is spent diving into Stan's personal life as he tries to rekindle a love life with, Mo (Angela Bassett), an ESPN reporter who he fell in love with and lost years ago. Angela Bassett was beautiful and great for the part, but the love interest took away from the comedy. It didn't make sense that he would fall out of contact with this beauty and then it was "game on" for the two of them nine years later.

Mr. 3000 would not have been a movie without Bernie Mac and I think that it could have been much better. The messsage was relevant for today, the story was funny and the ending was a surprise, but you didn't leave saying "I've got to see that again". It wasn't like a "Happy Gilmore" that still had a love interest and yet was hilarious and I think it could have been. We both still enjoyed the movie because it was different with enough laughs to keep our interest. We would put it somewhere between a rental and worth the trip.

Becky's Rating: *** Worth The Trip
John's Rating: ** Rental
