John & Becky's Movie Review Of "Wimbledon"  Becky and I saw "Wimbledon" this weekend and had mixed feelings about this slow moving love story. The official "Wimbledon" movie website can be viewed at http://www.wimbledonmovie.com/ and has more details about the film. You can also register to win a free trip to Wimbledon and they have a fun tennis game "Centre Court" that you can play with your arrow keys and spacebar.

The MovieFone website can be viewed at http://movies.channel.aol.com/movie/main.adp?mid=16225
and describes the story as follows:

The Story
A British tennis player, past the prime of his career, aspires one last time to reclaim his past glory during England's premier tournament. He finds help with his game and a little romance with a rising American star (Kirsten Dunst).

The Review
Peter Colt (Paul Bettany) is a professional tennis play ranked 119th in the world and ready to retire. Lizzy Bradbury (Kirsten Dunst) is a spoiled professional tennis star on the top of her game and ready to win Wimbledon.

As fate would have it the two meet up in this romantic comedy about love of the game versus love for each other. Bettany was great in this film and really made the movie. His character didn't have the huge ego you see with so many professional athletes today and he gets irritated a number of times when people say that he's ranked further out than he actually is. He's trying to hold on to whatever pride he once had in his younger tennis days on the pro tour.

Peter Colt didn't expect to beat anybody and was surprised he had been invited to play at all. Each time he played, he figured it was his last and he had a realistic attitude that he really shouldn't be there, let alone beating any of the younger competitors. They tried to add the dynamics of wisdom and experience takes on speed and youth, but didn't do a great job of playing up the card.

The movie also introduces the audience to his family, which was pretty funny. His brother for example bets against him everytime he plays figuring that Peter is such a loser mentally that it's a sure bet for him to make some extra cash. It went a bit overboard though with his Mom and Dad who are having marital problems and it didn't seem important to the film.

The really ridiculous part of the film is that Peter falls head over heals for Lizzie and each time they have an intimate encounter in the hotel room - he wins his game. The point, of course, was that his self esteem was built up by the girl and the whole movie is centered around whether he would "win the girl", "win the game" or win both. It was too predictable and it went from comical to serious to who cares far too many times. It could have been funnier than it was.

Becky commented that the female professional tennis star was far too provocative and "easy" for the film. It almost would have been better if he had run into a prostitute, like in "Pretty Woman", than to have him hook-up with this bombshell sex kitten tennis pro, who also happened to be competing at Wimbeldon.

There wasn't enough pizzaz to rate this as being "Worth The Trip", but we would suggest that you put it on your rental list when it comes out in a few months.

Becky's Rating: ** Rental
John's Rating: ** Rental
