John & Becky's Movie Review of "Wicker Park"  Becky and I saw "Wicker Park" last night with an audience of noisy star struck women. The official "Wicker Park" website can be viewed at http://www.mgm.com/wickerpark/ and has more detail about the film.

The Fandango website at http://www.fandango.com/movie_page.asp?mv=59130&aff=&source=fr2_t
describes the story as follows:

The Story
A man (Josh Hartnett) is caught in an obsessive search for a woman he fell deeply in love with - a woman who then vanished without a trace. Two years after her disappearance, he catches a fleeting glimpse of her in a local bar and begins a twisting search to find her and discover what really happened.

The Review
There are more twists in this movie than a New York pretzel. It was borderline confusing at times, but it does a good job of keeping your interest. The movie is promoted as a drama suspense / horror thriller. It's an obsession based love story about how crazy people can become when they become love struck.

Hartnett's character Matthew is a photographer turned advertising executive who doesn't like his corporate job and has moved back to Chicago after living in New York. He's engaged to the sister of his boss and he's landed his first big assignment to go to China and meet with a major client. He is in turmoil about his decision to marry because his true love is a pretty dancer named Lisa (Diane Kruger), who disappeared after he invited her to live with him.

Before getting on the plane to China, he believes he hears his true love talking on the phone and catches a glimpse of her leaving a local restaurant. This event begins his obsession for finding is lost girlfriend and why she left him without a trace. His fiancée believes he's in China, but he's really in Chicago and he teams up with a former friend who aids him in his quest.

From this point, Wicker Park turns into a movie with constant flashbacks to bring the audience up to speed on the events that have created Matthew's obsession. We soon discover that there is another woman, Alex (Rose Byrne), who is obsessed with Matthew and a friend of Lisa. Matthew doesn't know about this "other woman" who has a crush on him and desires to win his heart. The plot thickens with the driving force of obsessive love making people do crazy things until the final climatic ending.

The acting was good, but the chemistry between all of the characters was not there. Alex was diabolical, but you almost felt sorry for her even though she was driven by anger and false love. Matthew ends up treating his fiancée with the same contempt that he felt from his lost Lisa by telling her to hit the road because his heart was broken by another woman. Lisa is beautiful, but beyond her flashback's of beauty the movie never gives any insight into whether she has any depth.

In spite of its shortcomings we enjoyed the movie. For most people it's going to be a rental, but if you're a Josh Hartnett fan it will be worth the trip.

Becky's Rating: *** Worth The Trip
John's Rating: ** Rental
