John & Becky's Movie Review of "Hero"  Becky and I saw "Hero" on Friday night. The official website can be found at http://www.herothemovie.com/ and you will need Macromedia Flash 6 to view it.

The Fandango website - http://www.fandango.com/movie_page.asp?mv=83864&aff=&source=fr3_t describes the story as follows:

The Story
Raise the Red Lantern's acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou directs this martial arts epic set in China in the 3rd century b.c. Assassins are determined to murder the tyrannical king. A mysterious, nameless man appears at the king's palace claiming to have already dispatched the three most legendary killers. The king entreats him to describe in detail how he overcame each of them. So begins a Rashomon-like tale filled with high-flying action and passionate drama.

The Review
Becky and I went to this movie not knowing much about it. We didn't know that it was an epic martial arts film based on events in China during the Third Century BC. We didn't know that the entire film would be in subtitles (and they move fast). And we didn't know that it was going to be a story within a story where you watch the same people get killed over and over again in different situations.

Becky lasted about a half an hour and then looked over at me and said, "I'm out of here. Have fun and come meet me when this is over." She wasn't the only one to leave. There were several other women who got up and left, but I didn't see any guys leave.

If you like Jet Li, martial arts, Chinese history or you grew up on "Black Belt Theater" on Saturday mornings, you should like this film. It's a visually stunning movie with an interesting story and fantastic martial arts. There is a moral to the story on the need for war and the art of sword fighting. I think you will either really like this film or really hate it.

"Hero" has the "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" element with the martial arts experts having supernatural powers, such as the ability to fly and walk on water. It was tolerable though because it took place in the dialogue between the King and the nameless warrior. It was really their imagination of how events unfolded and not reality. This is driven home at the end of the movie. The hand to hand combat scenes were great and I liked the film more than "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon".

I liked this movie and would recommed it. Although, I would have enjoyed it more if it was done in English, but it's a Chinese movie that happened to make it to the American big screen.

Becky's Rating: * Don't Bother
John's Rating: *** Worth The Trip
