John & Becky's Movie Review Of "Troy"  Becky and I saw the much anticipated Brad Pitt movie "TROY" on Saturday night. The official movie website at http://troymovie.warnerbros.com/ is great for serious fans of the movie. One link I found interesting on the site is called "mobile" that they setup for people to enroll for updates about the movie on their mobile phone. This looks like a new service that Warner Bros. is testing out. It will be interesting to see if this works for them.

The Fandango website describes the story as follows: http://www.fandango.com/movie_page.asp?mv=84171

The Story
Eric Bana stars as Hector to Brad Pitt's Achilles. Hector is the prince of Troy, who leads the Trojan army in holding off the entire Greek armada. It is Hector's brother, Paris (Orlando Bloom), who steals the beautiful Helen away from her husband, Menelaus, the king of Sparta, and prompts the war between Greece and Troy. Peter O'Toole co-stars as Priam, king of Troy. Julie Christie plays Thetis, the mother of Achilles.

The Review
Here's the dilemma that you'll run into with this movie. It's definitely a movie for the big screen with all the action and adventure, but it's too long and far too dramatic. There are so many characters to keep track of that you never get emotionally attached to any of them. Part of me liked it and the other part of me thought it was a waste of time. That's the problem with this movie, it's non-commital.

It was a strange experience because after about two hours into the movie, there was a final battle between Hector and Achilles and I knew that one of them wasn't going to walk off the battle field. I actually knew which one from reading Homer back in school, many, many Moons ago. However, I didn't really care which one lived or died by this time. Brad Pitt kept yelling "Hector! --- Hector! --- Hector!" as he anxiously waited for him to come out from behind the Trojan wall and fight. It seemed like five minutes dragged on and Becky and I looked at each other and almost laughed. We were both thinking "Can someone on the wall shout down to Brad and let him know that he's on his way out?".

I heard one guy comment after the movie, "Well, it was no Gladiator." and I think that about summed it up. I heard they spent close to $200 million on this flick and it had monstrous potential, but it just didn't grab you and bring you in like "The Lord Of The Rings". Maybe our expectations were too high. After all, what can you expect for $200 million these days?

In the end, if you're a fan of Brad Pitt and big screen movies then you'll want to see this at the theaters. Just don't be surprised if you feel a bit schizophrenic while watching with thoughts like the following racing through your mind: "Do I like this movie or don't I?" "Why am I here?" "Should I have waited for the rental?" In conclusion it's not that bad, but it's just not that great.
