John & Becky's Movie Review Of "Open Water"  Becky and I saw "Open Water" last week. The official website is located at http://www.openwatermovie.com/ with reviews like "Prepare to jump out of your skin" and "The Summer's Scariest Movie", along with the words "based on true events".

The IMDB website at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374102/plotsummary describes the story as follows:

The Story
Susan and Daniel are a happily married couple hoping to have a memorable vacation in the Bahamas. Their relaxing vacation soon ends when they are left in the middle of the ocean by a careless diving boat crew. As the reality of isolation sets in, they turn to one another for support. Unable to support each other, they begin to panic and are soon prompted to question their own fates as encircling sharks start to appear.

The Review
This low budget film tried to do what "The Blair Witch Project" did back in 1999 only they missed an important element - an interesting story. Watching a couple go on vacation and spend an hour viewing them bob up and down in the ocean and complain to each other that they are going to die was not frightening, but miserable.

The hype of this film was that it was "based on true events". The true events turned out to be that this couple got lost at sea while on their diving trip and nobody knows what happened to them. The rest of the story is completely fabricated to make a movie. Did they get eaten by sharks, did they get picked up by drug runners, nobody really knows, but they made a movie about it. It's like making a movie about a kid on the back of a milk carton and calling it "based on true events" because he's missing.

We went to a late show that started at 10:00PM and by 11:00PM people were walking out and yelling, "This movie stinks!". We stayed and endured until the disappointing and shocking ending. There is not much more to say other than that if you are completely bored, having a bad day and want to watch something other than Jerry Springer to pick yourself up then go and rent this movie.

Otherwise don't bother.
