John & Becky's Movie Review Of "Collateral"  Becky and I saw "Collateral" on Friday. The official website is located at http://www.collateral-themovie.com/home.php with a catchy flash presentation. If you don't have a high speed Internet connection don't bother going or you'll be waiting for a big download.

The Fandango website - http://www.fandango.com/movie_page.asp?mv=85609&aff=&source=fr1_t describes the story as follows:

The Story
A cab driver learns that his current fare is a hit man that wants him to drive around from mark to mark until the last witness to a crime is dead. When the cabbie finally figures out the whole truth, he must prevent the assassin from wiping out his last witness without becoming the next in the professional killer's line of casualties.

The Review
"Max" (Jamie Foxx) is a veteran cabbie in Los Angeles on another typical evening giving rides around the city, when he finds himself with the wrong person in his backseat. "Vincent" (Tom Cruise) is a hit man, on a routine mission to whack five people before the night is over. All in a night's work for Tom Cruise's bad boy character.

Vincent offers Max $600 and a $100 bonus to rent his cab for the night and it's too much for Max to pass up after 12 years in his "temporary" position as a taxi driver. Poor Max has no idea that Vincent is going on an evening killing spree until it's too late. The first stop ends with a body flying out a window and landing on his car.

The first ten minutes of the movie moves a little slow as you meet Max and some of his clients, which includes a Federal prosecuting attorney, Annie Farrell (Jada Pinkett Smith). As Vincent goes around town bumping people off, Max starts to look at his life as a cabbie and starts to question his own mortality.

Some of the conversations between the two are entertaining and at times thought provoking. At one point in the film Vincent killed a drug dealer on his list and Max said, "You killed him?", and Vincent quickly replied "No, the bullets and the fall killed him. I just shot him." The movie has a number of shockers and keeps you wondering who's next on the list.

This is a different type of action thriller and we had mixed opinions about it. I liked it more than Becky did, but I teased her that it was because she didn't like seeing Tom Cruise play a bad guy with gray hair. I thought he did a great job as a criminal and Jamie Foxx was great too. There were some parts that were unbelievable and they could have done a better job tying up loose ends, but that's typical in most action flicks. I liked it because it was different and had a strange plot with good acting. Becky would have preferred seeing it on the rental rack.

Becky's Rating: ** Rental
John's Rating: *** Worth The Trip
