John & Becky's Movie Review of "Godsend"  Becky and I saw "Godsend" on Friday night with Becky's parents who were traveling through Denver on their way back to Minnesota. The "Godsend" website at http://www.godsendthemovie.com/ has a link to the trailer and to a website called "The Institute". It's the Institute featured in the movie to make it look like a real place. Of course this make no sense, but neither does this movie. The Fandango website describes the story as follows: http://www.fandango.com/movie_page.asp?mv=84165&aff=&source=fr1_p

The Story
The heavy grief a couple feels after the death of their young son is unrelenting and unceasing. Desperate to heal their wounds, they turn to a stem cell research scientist. He uses a new cloning and regeneration technology to bring their son back to them. He does come back...but he is not the same.

The Review
The movie starts out slow with the couple played by Greg Kinnear and Rebecca Romijn Stamos living in the inner city with their only child and trying to make ends meet. Should they move from the city they love and take a higher paying job in the country? After all, they have to think about the quality of life for their child growing up in the inner city. Then tragedy strikes when the child is killed in a freak accident. In walks Robert Deniro to save the day. At the boy's funeral arrangement of all places, he convinces the parents to bring their dead child back by cloning him from his own DNA. It's downhill from there.

Deniro is about as interested in his character as you will be in watching this movie. The other actors do their best to try to keep this thing alive, but it's as dead as the cloned kid and there's no hope of resurrection. At one point Deniro in a fit of rage clubs Kinnear over the head with a metal object and leaves him for dead in a burning church. Jump ahead two scenes and Greg is back saving his wife from a whacked out kid that has been morphed into a genetic Frankenstein.

There are more holes in this movie than a young teenagers pair of bluejeans. One person leaving the movie referred to it as a poor man's Shining, but even that would have been scarier and more interesting,

In the end, Becky's Dad was the only one who thought it might have been worth the trip. So, there is an audience out there somewhere that may get a kick out of this film. Becky thought it was a rental and so did her Mom and as you can probably tell, I'm giving it a "don't bother" for my review.

Becky's Rating: ** Rental
John's Rating: * Don't Bother
