John & Becky's Movie Review of "Man On Fire"  Becky and I saw "Man On Fire" on Friday night. The "Man On Fire" website at http://www.manonfiremovie.com/ has a flash presentation about the movie that gives a good overview. The Fandango website describes the story as follows: http://www.fandango.com/movie_page.asp?mv=84165&aff=&source=fr1_p

The Story
"Man on Fire" centers on an American ex-soldier (Denzel Washington) living out his days in Mexico. An old friend by the name of Reyburn (Christopher Walken) persuades the ex-soldier to protect a child, Pinta Balletto (Dakota Fanning), whose parents are threatened by a rash of kidnappings.

The Review
> Denzel Washington plays a reluctant body guard for a little girl in Mexico City, which is a known hot spot for kidnappings. You learn early on that a kidnapping takes place in this city about every 60 minutes with 70% ending in the death of the victim. Denzel's character is battling with demons from his past as a military assassin and he isn't keen on getting involved with this family or the little girl. As the story progresses, she opens up his heart and then she is kidnapped - he goes on a rampage of vengence.

Becky didn't like the cinematography because the Director jumps the camera around at times to give it a crazy feel. It also is not a very uplifting movie because you get a glimpse into how many whackos are out there who place little value on human life and believe money is more valuable than life. Of course, this is nothing new, but the movie draws you in emotionally because you love the little girl who has a big heart (Dakota Fanning).

Denzel was great in this flick. It's not your typical shoot em' up where the action hero is like Superman. He actually gets injured and has a difficult time physically after being shot. It reminded me of a classic 70's movie, like Serpico where you've got a tough guy character who is not invincible. Which is one reason I liked the film. It was a bit brutal when he dealt with the creeps involved in the kidnapping, but you could empathize with his character being fed up with the sicko's given his history.

The strangest part of the film was at the end when the Director showed what happened to several of the characters as though it was a true story. You may remember that they did this in National Lampoons Animal House, but you understood it was a joke. This was not and it had everyone wondering if it was based on a true story. We couldn't find anything to validate that fact, so it was odd that they chose to end the movie that way.

In conclusion, I really like action flicks, so I thought it was worth the trip. Becky thought it would have been better since she is fan of Denzel Washington as an actor. She commented that you left the film feeling as though you had been to a funeral. Which is why she is recommending to wait for the rental.

Becky's Rating: ** Rental
John's Rating: *** Worth The Trip
