John & Becky's Movie Review Of "The Alamo"  I finally went to see The Alamo with my friend Billy Hotzfield. Becky is not a history buff, so she had no desire to "Remember The Alamo", but don't hold it against her. My buddy Billy had a brain injury from an ATV accident, a little over a year ago, so on Wednesday's we like to catch a flick after Billy's physical therapy. The Alamo website at http://www.thealamofilm.com/ describes the story as follows:

The Story
From director John Lee Hancock and Oscar®-winning producers Mark Johnson and Ron Howard comes an epic motion picture event, the dramatic true story of one of the most momentous battles in American history. “The Alamo” is the tale of a handful of men who stood up for their passion and ideals against an overwhelming force. In the spring of 1836, in the face of insurmountable odds, fewer than 200 ordinary men who believed in the future of Texas held the fort for 13 days against thousands of Mexican soldiers led by dictator General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (EMILIO ECHEVARRÍA), ruler of Mexico. Commanded by three men – the young, brash Lt. Col. William Travis (PATRICK WILSON); the zealous, passionate James Bowie (JASON PATRIC); and the living legend David Crockett (BILLY BOB THORNTON) – the Texans would sacrifice their lives for their beliefs, but their deeds at the Alamo would make history as General Sam Houston’s (DENNIS QUAID) emotional rallying call for Texas independence. The film is written by Leslie Bohem and Oscar®-winner Stephen Gaghan and John Lee Hancock.

The Review
The film critics panned this movie and gave it a one star rating on many websites. Hollywood.com was kind enough to give it at a star and a half. Boy were they wrong! This was a great film! Sure it's been done before, but how many people have never seen the other versions and who cares. It's an American historical event that helped shape the great state of Texas. If you liked Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" then you should like The Alamo.

Billy Bob Thorton was an interesting choice for Davey Crockett and he brings the character to life. He portrayed the pressure of being an ordinary man, placed in extra-ordinary circumstances and trying to live up to a larger than life reputation.

The film moves a bit slow at times as you wait for General Santa Anna to make his move during this legendary 13 day standoff. The Director makes the point that Santa Anna thought he was the Napoleon of Mexico and this was his logic for torturing his victims. There is a bit of a slam that if they don't take The Alamo then Mexico will become second class to the United States, which probably got some of the critics' dander up.

Jason Patrick gave a good performance with what he had to work with. He played the legendary James Bowie (the guy behind the Bowie knife) who was dying from health problems. He had flashbacks about his dead wife and they never told us how she died, so that was a bit strange.

Billy and I both thought the movie was going to end at the Alamo and we were surprised that it went on with General Sam Houston taking revenge on Santa Anna and making Texas free. I read one film critic claim that by doing this, they turned "The Alamo into a happy ending", but he was probably from New York City and not Texas. The Alamo was a happy ending if you're from Texas.

This was a great flick and you can still catch it, if you're fast. It's too bad it got such bad reviews from the critics. On the other hand, you shouldn't have to wait in line for a ticket. So, if you're with your date this Friday night and "13 going on 30" is filling up with crazy teenagers - "Remember The Alamo".

Billy's Rating: **** Don't Miss It
John's Rating: *** Worth The Trip
