Upgrading Microsoft Great Plains Dynamics GP – Alba Spectrum

This article is written to warn you that you should not expect that Microsoft Dynamics GP upgrade wizard will do all you version update job, especially in the cases when you have modified or custom GP logic, or deploy ISV third party GP modules. There is the whole spectrum of technologies, which allow and allowed your in the past, to alter Microsoft Great Plains ERP business logic and you should think through all your custom logic and deployed technologies, prior to inserting the CD with new GP version to launch upgrade wizard:

Great Plains Dexterity Customizations. Locate DYNAMICS.SET file in your GP workstation folder (in the case if you are on 9.0 this should be Microsoft Dynamics\GP, if you are on older version GP WS folder is whatever your GP installation consultant had chosen). Dynamics.set file has “all” the information to give you the answer if you use Dexterity custom modules or ISV third party modules (Mekorma, Avalara, WennSoft, Horizon Manufacturing, Intellisol to name a few). If you have custom dex dictionaries, you should contact ISV if new version is available for the GP version you plan to upgrade to; in the case when you have unique dex custom logic created for your company by Microsoft Business Solutions VAR, please obtain DYNAMICS.DIC or EXTRACT.DIC dictionaries files – these files should have sanscript dexterity scripts not stripped out to allow your new GP partner to upgrade your Dexterity modification
Reporting Upgrade. You should investigate which reporting technologies you used in your previous version, possible technologies are: Crystal Reports, Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services, MS Access, Web Reports, Dexterity Reports (either Microsoft Dynamics GP Alternate reports or custom reports)
