We often hear from our customers and prospects that version update is something they really don’t like to do very often, so it might be good idea to skip one version and it is really your decision if you accept to be a bit outdated with your ERP. In our opinion, “being outdated” doesn’t typically apply to your MRP functionality, that you use, but rather the question of compatibility of the outdated ERP version with current operating system, database platform, etc. Also, Microsoft Business Solutions has certain time limit in supporting historical version, so, when the old version is no longer supported by Microsoft itself – you may feel some level of discomfort, especially if you are corporate business with IT policies. Let’s come through version update checkpoints:

Third Party Modules: Mekorma, Wennsoft, Avalara, DynamicsZip, Intellisol – these are examples of third party ISV modules. Prior to going to upgrade, you should be sure, that your ISV has upgrade path and the new version. If you have unique customization, created for your company by third party Microsoft Dexterity development company or consultant, you should have (or request) DYNAMICS.DIC (or EXTRACT.DIC) with your custom logic scripts – this will allow your new Dex development partner to analyze and upgrade your modification.
Custom Reports. These are in both ReportWriter and external reporting, such as Crystal Reports or SRS. You should document and analyze your custom reports. Regarding GP Report Writer reports – some of them should be redone (as being not upgradeable in new version), so you should plan on new version switch over timing
Custom SQL Integrations. If you have custom integration, then it should be reviewed by GP SQL developer to avoid surprises after version upgrade
Post work transactions and run check links – this is recommended prior to upgrade
