Microsoft Great Plains is coming through evolution way to offset its former Great Plains Dexterity legacy with such newer tools as eConnect, which is in fact a set of store procedures, at this time they imitate Dex business login to some extent (as eConnect doesn’t work with transaction or batch posting – you will need Alba Spectrum Posting Server to extend eConnect to do posting from your eCommerce application). GP Integration Manager (IM) formerly deploying Great Plains as OLE server, now is being rewritten to connect to GP back office via eConnect as well. eConnect insider. It is a set of SQL Server encrypted stored procedures, they give you, if you are eCommerce Visual Studio C# or VB.Net developer/programmer, some feeling of OOP – object oriented approach, which is obviously not present in old-good-days Dex
VBA/Modifier. This integration technology, and plus VBA scripting for Great Plains Integration Manager seems to be long living one, regardless of multiple now historical announcements of its phasing out. It is available for version 10.0
Dexterity Integrations. Dex has complete control over GP data and business processes, including posting, SOP orders transfer to invoices, etc. Dexterity was traditionally considered as Great Plains Architecture. However, as you can imaging every new version of GP is addition and redesign of former Dex dictionary – DYNAMICS.DIC – you should expect custom dex integration to be upgraded to comply to new dex dictionary. This is where you need Dexterity developers and software programmer to be involved
XML Web Services and SQL Stored Procedures. Web Service can call eConnect logic, plus it can work via ADO.Net with stored procs. SQL Scripting is allowed in Dynamics and company databases in GP (in comparison to MS CRM, where you can not alter CRM database)
Tables Import. We don’t recommend you to use this tool, as it comes to earlier days of Great Plains Dynamics – it is wiser to utilize IM, which validates business logic prior to inserting records into GP tables
