If you are on old Great Plains versions: 9.0, 8.0, 7.5, 7.0, 6.0 or even 5.5 or 5.0 – you may decide to upgrade. If you are on non MS SQL Server platform, such as Pervasive SQL, Ctree/Faircomm then you will need to undergo migration to Microsoft SQL Server path. In the case of Great Plains Dexterity, Modifier/VBA, Integration Manager customizations, integrations, reporting (such as Crystal Reports or SRS) – these modified logic pieces should be reviewed to comply and work with newer version, currently it is GP 10.0

Upgrade Path. For version 10.0 – at this time you can upgrade from 9.0 SP2 or 8.0 SP5. If you are on OEM version of 9.0 (without service packs applied), you should consider apply 9.0 SP2 and then upgrade to 10.0. If you have newer builds than 9.0 SP2 – you should wait until GP 10 SP1 will be released later in 2007. If you are on older than 9.0 or 8.0, then you should have intermediate step upgrading to either 9 or 8 and then go to 10
Dexterity customization upgrade scenarios. First question is this – do you have customization source code: Dynamics.dic or extract.dic with sanscript source code there – this is typically the question to your former Dex developers. If you do have the dictionary, then customization is technically possible – Dex developers will analyze your codes and their compatibility with version 10 and give you an estimate. If you don’t have original customization dictionary – then customization might be redone from scratch, however as you probably feel – this situation is not ideal
eConnect integrations. Since version 7.5 we see eConnect penetration into the GP customization world, especially in eCommerce scenarios. Each new version of GP may require eConnect re-integration works and code analysis
Reporting. Crystal Reports and SRS should be pretty stable to version upgrade. However, Microsoft Dynamics GP ReportWriter reports, such as SOP Long Invoice form, typically modified by placing company logo on and altering addresses – RW reports need to be upgraded by professional GP consultant
Custom SQL Stored Procedures. GP is often a subject to these modifications (Crystal Reports are typically based on SQL SP or View) – SP should be also upgrade tolerant, however if your business depends heavily on these custom objects, it is safer to get SP set reviewed, prior to going live with 10
