How to backup and restore Microsoft Great Plains Dynamics GP Company into the test database

First of all – you should be reasonably familiar with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Enterprise manager or Ms SQL Server 2005 Management Studio – if this is the case and you know what you are doing, let’s go ahead:

GP Company DB Backup is relatively straight forward: Right click on database in SQL management tool and select all tasks backup database
GP Company restore into the test company. This routine is a bit tricky. You should understand what is your risk when you mark “restore over existing database” and when you have to change DB restoration files (for DB and log files)
Users activity. SQL Server (as you probably naturally expect), doesn’t allow you to restore DB from backup if users are currently logged into and so potentially are working with database, that you target for your restoration. If you are doing remote support, this means that you have to call your customer and ask all the users physically log off, prior to when you can deploy such techniques as killing processes in SQL Server Enterprise Manager
Moving GP from one SQL Server to another. Please find our article in open press. This routine is not recommended for internal IT departments, it should be rather performed by GP technical consultant
