Microsoft Dynamics GP currently is supported for MS SQL Server database platform, however direct data feeding into SQL tables should probably be avoided due to the fact that Great Plains data should comply to numerous business rules,  In other words, it is safer to use such tools as eConnect, Microsoft Dynamics GP Integration Manager or in some cases GP macros to validate application business logic in adding master records (customer, vendor, employee, etc) and transactions (sales and purchasing invoices, etc).  In this small article we would like to give you some hints on Microsoft Dynamics GP data conversion:

• Initial Balances Approach.  This is the simplest and probably recommended way – you keep your legacy ERP for history lookup, in Great Plains you enter GL beginning balances, import your customers and vendors and begin new fiscal year in GP.  When your customer calls and asks you about last year transaction, you open legacy MRP and give the answer from there
• Historical Records.  If you need history in your new accounting – you should try to minimize historical data conversion, again due to the requirements of business logic validation in bringing in historical records.  Some people could disagree – who cares – you bring history “as is”.  Unfortunately, there is the problem – when you post or move your records to the history in the regular business operations, you may conflict with your history data conversion inaccuracy.
• Data Conversion Tools.  The easiest one is Integration Manager.  However integration manager can only bring master records and work transactions, then you should post these work transactions.  The same should be told about eConnect data conversions, however eConnect is usually applicable to ongoing data integrations.  The next tool is SQL – here you have to deploy Microsoft Dynamics GP consultant, who is familiar with Microsoft Great Plains data migration.
