It is normal to switch over from one MRP system to another. ERP as any other computer application has its life cycle. When you switch from legacy system to Microsoft Dynamics GP Great Plains – one of the first questions will be this: how do I migrate my legacy accounting records into new ERP: accounts, GL transactions, customers, vendors, employees, AP & AR transactions, bank reconciliation, inventory items, inventory adjustments, transfers, stock count, etc, etc. This question is in fact structured and may have multiple answers and compromises. We would like to introduce you your options and how other customers did this data migration to GP:

Master Records: customer, vendor, account, employee, inventory item master tables – this migration is relatively simple – you extract from your legacy system the records either via reporting or via export functionality and then you import into GP – the best scenario is to deploy GP Integration Manager (IM) module; if not possible to use IM – you can import via SQL scripting (after you are done – you run check links to add additional required data and synchronize it in GP)
Beginning Balances. Typically you do not convert transactions in modules, you just do one beginning balances GL record to make your chart of accounts reflect your beginning of the period when you switch over from legacy accounting to GP. This approach is the best and very “cost efficient” – you do not do any data conversion, in fact you enter beginning balances as GL transaction and post (be sure to specify correct posting date)
Historical Data conversion. This way we recommend you to avoid or resist to follow it as much as possible – you will get high data migration cost and potential inaccuracy in your GP history (which may in turn effect your future transactions: SOP cost, for example)
