ERP implementation, customization, reports design, database development, version update, initial data conversion and migration require either consulting firm or contractor selection – Microsoft Dynamics GP is relatively complex application, this is why Microsoft Business Solution requires GP to be sold and professionally implemented by certified GP reseller. We would like to introduce you into GP technology:

Microsoft Dexterity. This is the core of GP architecture – Dexterity places requirement on Microsoft SQL Server tables structure (DEX_ROW_ID for instance), DYNAMICS.DIC, REPORTS.DIC, FORMS.DIC – these are dictionaries, created by Dex application. Dexterity in turn is written in C programming language and is portable from one platform to another, however currently GP is available on Microsoft SQL Server only (Pervasive SQL and Ctree support was terminated in 2005, last version, supporting these platform was Microsoft Great Plains 7.5)
Microsoft SQL Server. SQL Server itself requires professional to install, tune it (maintenance plans: backup, reindexing, etc). In our opinion – for small organization SQL Server could be installed internally with minimal professional consultant involvement, however if you are large business with high volume of daily transactions – you should expect the need in regular data repair and maintenance – so internal SQL DBA or professional consultant or SQL developer help is recommended
Modules. GP is modular system: GL, SOP, RM, POP, IV, PM, UPR, MA – these abbreviations are not very friendly if you didn’t do your homework yet in selecting ERP fitting your business requirements, however if you decided on GP – you maybe very knowledgeable at this point already
