What SEO Software Marketers Are NOT Telling You When You Give Them Your Hard-Earned Dollars

Why This Review?

If you're a Webmaster or a SEO (like myself), who wants to rank highly in Google and friends, I bet you know what link popularity is all about. Right, it's about the quantity AND quality of other Websites that link to yours.

I'm sure you've also heard of reciprocal link exchange (a.k.a. RLE), which is the most widely used technique to improve your link popularity. One problem with RLE is that it takes a hell of a lot of time and effort if you go ahead and do it manually.

When I started out with my link popularity campaigns (some three years ago), I soon discovered I needed some powerful link exchange software to automate as many steps in this process as possible. So I went googling with an eye on the feature-rich, the fast, and, of course, the affordable RLE tools out there

And you know what struck me most when I actually went ahead and tried these link popularity tools that promised to save countless hours I could spend on my wife and fishing? That 99 times out of a hundred these tools were so limited, and sometimes so darn overpriced, I'd be better off doing away with an Excel sheet and my WWW browser!

But, don't get me wrong. It finally turned out to be not as bad as it seemed back then ;-) While no link popularity tool can still completely meet my demands, there are some new players that show promise.

When I say "my demands" I mean my own criteria I developed over time about what a good RLE tool should be like. Based on these, I compiled quite a comprehensive list of the available link popularity products, which I humbly present here in the hope it might be useful for someone else.

In this article, I'll tell you all I know about quite a number of software tools I actually tried that can make reciprocal link exchange a much less time-consuming and tedious process.

Disclaimer: I did my best to avoid any kind of prejudice and biased judgment, leaving it all up to you to decide. What I did was I tried to rank each product on a 10-point scale, with "10" representing the highest rank, based on the criteria described below. What I think are superior tools are presented first.

On the other hand, in an effort to make this long writing mildly entertaining, I did provide several personal comments concerning every product, as well as some special awards at the very end.

So feel free to view the info in this comparison as a one person's opinion, and if you ever think of link exchange, be sure to go try these RLE products yourself and share your thoughts with me. Just drop me a line at josh_g_collins@lycos.com.

Must-Have Features You Can't Live Without

Before we get going, I think it'd be nice to define the ranking criteria so that any judgment is fair and square. Now, in my humble opinion, the whole point of using an RLE solution is to automate as many steps in the link exchange process as possible, especially those that are overly time-consuming, right?

If you ever tried link exchange yourself, you'll agree that the main steps you're most likely to go through are:

  1. Finding potential link exchange partners;
  2. Keeping high PageRank and high link popularity partners and filtering out "junk partners" that will do more harm than good (as far as link popularity goes, it's also the quality that matters, remember?);
  3. Putting a link to every "good" partner on your Links or Resources page;
  4. Uploading this newly created/updated Links page to the server and making it available online;
  5. Sending individual emails to your link partners telling them about the link you have pointing to their sites, and asking them to link back;
  6. Checking if your link partners actually link back to you over time, and getting rid of them if they don't.
IMO, these are all absolutely must-have features for any reciprocal link exchange product, save for the Links page upload maybe, but I personally find this very nice to have. Some of the software tools described below actually offer much more than these. Other tools, however, are a lot more limited.

But wait, there's more to it:

  1. Overall usability and ease of use. This is essential, since too complex a product can be a pain to use, no matter how great it is.
  2. If emails you send to link partners can be customized. Important, since you'll probably want to personalize your mails to be more successful in convincing other Webmasters to link to you.
  3. If the created HTML Links page can be customized to match your site's design. Also important, since you don't need a just plain HTML document that looks... well... ugly ;-) Also, you might want to create a two- or three-column Links page.
  4. If the created Links page supports categories. This is a great feature: It allows you to organize your Links page in an easy to navigate way and make it look professional, like a real Web directory.
  5. If link partner statuses are available, editable, and easy to use. This is another great and often overlooked feature that's actually a must-have for me. Example: Let's say you just sent 500 emails to 500 potential partners. If you can assign these partners a special status (such as "Email Sent, Waiting For Reply"), you'll have no trouble finding, removing or otherwise managing these partners later, after you send another 500 emails.
  6. If a product integrates with a WWW browser to preview Links pages and sites.
These are all nice features I've come to expect in a decent link exchange product. After all, these are all big time-savers, and we're in here to save time and automate as many things as possible, are we not?

OK, now I think we can get down to it.

Desktop Software Products Designed For Link Exchange

I use the term "Desktop" here to refer to "normal" application programs, as opposed to Web-based (a.k.a. server-side) solutions and scripts. (BTW, I have plans to offer a comparison of Web-based RLE tools in the future, so stay tuned.)

OK, proudly presenting the link popularity contestants (go make yourself a cup of your favorite beverage, 'cause there are quite a few I tried):

Other Useful or Unique Features:

  1. Receiving and organizing emails (Useful: You can quickly filter all mail from a specific link partner and forget about MS Outlook or Apple Mail at all)
  2. Ability to update properties for multiple link partners at once (a very useful time-saver)
  3. ARELIS import (Only useful for dropout ARELIS users, obviously)
  4. Support for external browsers
  5. Customizable Workspaces (Useful, enables you to organize and find things faster.)
  6. Project export to a variety of formats (Useful, IMO, since it enables you to keep your data if you decide to drop this tool and use another one. This feature is not unique, but is, compared to others, very well developed.)
Pros:Feature-rich, easy-to-use solution. Fast and friendly Customer Support, from first-hand experience: The guys add features as you request them. Full customization and live preview of your Links page is available from within the software.
Cons:In my experience, the built-in browser sometimes refuses to show certain pages, but external browsers are supported. Also, LinkAssistant requires Java which is free to download but is 13Mb (Mac OS X and apparently Linux users already have that, Windows users are offered a Java-inside version of the product, which is 17Mb.)

My Personal Rating: 10

Overall Ease-Of-Use: 9

Nice-To-Have Progress Tracking Features:
Your Website's Link Popularity Check: Yes
Your Website's Keyword Rankings Check: Yes

Runs On: Windows

Other Useful or Unique Features:

  1. Receiving mails (Useful. Mails cannot be organized as easily as with LinkAssistant, though.)
  2. Banned Websites check (Useful, enables you to check if you're accidentally linking to "bad neighborhood". As far as I got it, the software checks for Google PR and indexed pages of the sites you specify.)
  3. Directory submission (Not really useful, IMHO, there are many specific services that do a better job.)
  4. Keyword optimization report and Overture research (Nice to have, but not at all required for RLE.)
  5. Backlink analysis (Useful, enables you to decide which keywords to include into link anchor text)
  6. Finding "Hub Sites" for chosen keywords (Can't say how useful this is. According to the product description, this can potentially improve your rankings.)
Pros:Feature-rich, easy-to-use solution. Well-written built-in Help. Offers several SEO tools to boot, which are not directly related to RLE, but are nice to have. Price is very reasonable.
Cons:Link Partners and mail management is a bit limited. In my experience, runs quite slow and takes a lot of time to actually start up. Setup is about 17Mb.

My Personal Rating: 9

Contestant #3:
Name: ARELIS
URL: http://www.axandra-link-popularity-tool.com/
Version: 4.4.2
Price: $99.95 (for two sites only)/$299.95(for unlimited number of sites)
Trial: 100 Link Partners, emails are sent to your own address and the links in your link directory point to a generic page.

Must-Have Features:
Finding Link Partners: Yes
Finding And Auto-Completing Link Submission Forms: No
Qualifying Link Partners (Google PR/Link Popularity Check): No
Automatically Creating A Links Page: Yes
Links Pages Support Categories: Plain
Links Pages Are Completely Customizable: Yes
Links Pages Upload With FTP: No
Sending Personalized Emails: Limited (only one at a time)
Checking If Link Partners Link Back: Yes
Link Partners Statuses: Yes
Integrated Browser: Yes

Nice-To-Have Progress Tracking Features:
Your Website's Link Popularity Check: No
Your Website's Keyword Rankings Check: No

Overall Ease-Of-Use: 8

Runs On: Windows

Other Useful or Unique Features: Project statistics

Pros:Reliable, time-tested software. Been long on the market. Offers a variety of search engines to work with, but doesn't make it easy, though.
Cons:My biggest gripe with it is that it'll only let me send one individual email at a time.

Also, doesn't show Google PR for link partners, making it difficult to qualify them.

The most "recent" version was released in July 2004, almost two years ago, so no new capabilities has been added since then. With this feature-set, the "unlimited number of sites" version is too expensive.

My Personal Rating: 8

Contestant #4:
Name: SEO Studio
URL: http://www.trendmx.com/
Version: 1.7.10 (they have a new version 2.0.4, but I didn't manage to try it out, it just crashes at start-up for me)
Price: $79.00/$329.99 +annual fee ($49.99/$99.99 per year)
Trial: very limited capabilities

Must-Have Features:
Finding Link Partners: Yes
Finding And Auto-Completing Link Submission Forms: No
Qualifying Link Partners (Google PR/Link Popularity Check): Yes

Link Partners Statuses: Yes
Integrated Browser: Yes

Nice-To-Have Progress Tracking Features:
Your Website's Link Popularity Check: No
Your Website's Keyword Rankings Check: Yes

Overall Ease-Of-Use: 5

Runs On: Windows XP/2000 (Will not run on Windows NT, 95/98 and ME Operating Systems)

Pros:Offers a lot of useful and nice-to-have SEO tools (Enterprise version mostly, though)
Cons:While features are abundant (the product offers not just RLE, but a lot more), the program doesn't make it easy to use them at all. The user interface is a bit of a pain to use, so the time you spend getting used to it could be spent on a lot more productive activities ;-)

Also, most powerful features are only available in Enterprise version. The Lite and Standard versions only allow you to manage 25 and 50 Link Partners respectively, which makes these editions pretty useless for link exchange, IMO.

Your Website's Link Popularity Check: Yes
Your Website's Keyword Rankings Check:

Overall Ease-Of-Use: 7

Runs On: Windows

Pros:Offers an advanced link popularity statistics feature (similar to WebLink SEO.)
Cons:The Customer Support is poor, from first-hand experience: Feature requests are simply ignored. The "just released" 3.2 version has not been updated for more than a year. A much-hyped mediocre product.

Also, the product's 7 tools or ("Projects") are kind of separated from one another, and this lack of integration is the product's biggest limitation.

OK, Now Who's Won The Race?

Winners
LinkAssistant and WebLink SEO (ranked 10 and 9 respectively) are the two most feature-rich, easy-to-use and affordable SEO tools I would recommend. Each offers some features the other one does not, but overall, I think these two products are on par. Be it not for the WebLink SEO's somewhat sluggish performance, this product would also get a "10". Note that these two have great feature-sets and are very reasonably priced.

Update: Because I recently purchased a MacBook Pro laptop powered with OS X Tiger (love it!), LinkAssistant's ability to run on both Windows and Mac means a lot more to me now than it used to. Come to think of it, LinkAssistant is one of the very few link popularity software available for Macs, and a good one, too.

"Runners-Up"
Tools ranked 8 or 7 are generally well-designed and easy-to-use, sometimes provide additional "nice-to-have" features, but actually lack one or more must-have capabilities I can't do without. You can try these yourself and make up your mind.

In this category, ARELIS could probably be my choice, if I didn't try the Winners.

"How Do I... And How Much Did You Say It Costs?!"
Products ranked 6 or 5 are quite straightforward, but too limited in capabilities, or way too overpriced for the features they offer. Not recommended. Invest your money elsewhere.

Now, I do understand everybody's got to make a living. But pay between $100-$150 for a link popularity tool that doesn't do almost anything useful? No way. Go for the Winners instead.

And I don't care how much some of these tools are hyped: I do my decision-making based on the product's capabilities alone, and so should everybody else, for the benefit of the whole SEO community.

All The Rest
Link popularity tools ranked 4 and below are, let's face it, not really worth your while AND the money asked. Period.

Special Awards

"Pretty Face" Award
Kudos to WebLinkPro, the good-looking product designed for the good-looking Mac OS. I really can't think of anything against this tool, except that it's just too limited in capabilities for me. Hence the rating.

The "Sluggish Snail That Costs A Small Fortune" Award
This award goes to PR Prowler, the software tool that eats too much traffic, is slow, and costs around $100 for the two features it provides. I'm sorry, but this is just rich.

The "Pablo Picasso" Award
Reciprocal Link Manager is by far the most confusing flashy kid on the block. OK, you guys like Picasso, I can understand that. But don't you think you're crossing the line trying to make your customers love him too? Just kidding ;-)

"Where's Did My Homepage In Google Go?" Award
A while ago, I was revisiting the homepages of all the products listed above. What I did was type in the product's name in Google and click on the first result, which usually would be the homepage. Guess what? This doesn't work for SEO Elite, though it used to. At the time of writing, SEO Elite's homepage is not in Google results anymore.

Thank You,Guys!

Kudos go to everyone who managed to read this long story to the end. Read and re-read this article, visit the products' Websites, use the trial versions if available, and make up your own mind.

I hope this writing will become a useful guide helping SEOs and Webmasters choose the right tool to accomplish their link popularity tasks.

Before I forget, thanks go to everybody who helped create this piece (they know their names ;-) and to my wife Angelina who was inspiring me.

Hope you enjoyed this article and best of luck optimizing your site!
