Google Page Rank is the very best measure at present of a websites importance. However this does not mean that a PR 1, 2 or 3 website is a bad place to buy or gather information from. In fact any Page Rank at all given by Google is alone a good indication that the company or individual you are about to deal with is playing by the Google rules. Google have a very fair policy in which they work out a Page Rank. They use a mathematical formula which allows them to find the importance of your website. The main factor will be the amount of quality backlinks that your wesite is getting. Another main factor is the keyword density within your webpage. There are no tricks to get to the top of the search engines however. You can do it with work, getting those backlinks, checking your keyword density - not too high, not too low. Keyword density should be around 1.5-3% for your top keywords.
If you can get websites linking to yours, where they have a higher Page Rank than you, this helps a lot. Add your website to directories or give something away free, allowing others to link back to you!
Website submission to search engines is a good idea to get your webpages seen, but there are rules here. For a start there are only three real search engines. We have Google, MSN and Yahoo. Most if not all other 'search engines' use on of the main three as there database. So ultimatly submitting to the others is a waste of time. The other point to remember is that the search engines robots will find you if others are linking back to you. This is the prefered way for a search robot to find you, it means that you are already important enough in others eyes therefore you are important in Googles eyes too. So don't even bother to add your url to search engines, be patient and they will come to you. This will only be the case of course if you have good relevent backlinks already. This is probably the only time you will have to pay out money, for the backlinks in high ranking page rank web direcories. Web directories are a great way to create backlinks to your site. There are many a directory that will list your website for free and some require you to link back to them also. Some internet directories will ask for a charge for instant additions or on a letting agreement.
Whether or not you choose to pay for web directory backlinks or not is up to you, be aware of the pages Page Rank that you are being added to because if this not a higher Page Rank than your website, the whole backlink idea is pointless. The trick is getting higher ranking websites to link back to you, preferably without you having to link back as two way linking will not score your rank as highly as one way linking. To rank high in search engines takes time.
