IRAQ’S THANKSGIVING GIFT TO AMERICA  IRAQ’S THANKSGIVING GIFT TO AMERICA

J. Grant Swank, Jr.

Iraq has sent its own Thanksgiving season present to the United States.

"Giving thanks is an Iraqi tradition as well as an American one. This is the minimum we could do after the Americans shed their blood in our country, mixing their blood with ours," said the president of Iraq’s Red Crescent Relief organization, the latter similar to America’s Red Cross.

Iraq sent $1 million as the country’s “’thank you’ donation to the victims of Hurricane Katrina,” reports Paul Martin of The Washington Times.

In other words, what goes ‘round, comes ‘round.

I recall one of our TV newsanchormen asking an Iraqi representative some months ago why it was that it appeared that the Iraqis were not all that thankful to the US for Operation Iraqi Freedom. I wanted to say to that anchorman: “Don’t you realize that at first Iraqis were traumatized for they did not know if they trusted the US-led Coalition. In other words, was the dictatorship actually over? Could they trust their liberators? Or was this just another chapter in ####’s canyon read?

“Further, when people are traumatized, they are numb. They can’t move that fast from despotism to democracy planting. Many don’t known what ‘democracy’ means. They have never experienced freedom. They don’t know what ‘freedom of speech’ means.

“In addition, they are still dealing with their own Muslim murderers trying to bring down the liberation. So how can they juggle all these emotions in order to bring into focus a ‘thank you’ note to the US-led Coalition?”

With time passing the US-led Coalition now called the “multinational forces,” Iraqis can have the wits about them to send their first Thanksgiving “thank you” note by way of an actual money send to America. It’s marvelous. It’s cause for all newsfeeds in the United States to give note. Everyone in the entire free world should know of the Red Crescent move in gratitude to their freedom carriers.

But of course the liberal press will say nothing. This evening TV newscasts will say nothing. Barbara Walters and team will have no documentaries. Nevertheless, “it is still more blessed to give than to receive;” therefore, the Iraqis themselves will receive the blessing.

“The sum, transferred by wire on Sunday, amounts to 20 percent of the organization's annual budget.

"’I wish we could have a billion dollars to give,’ said the organization's president. ‘Even then, it is not enough to show our appreciation for what the U.S. has done for Iraq and is still doing.’

“The donation was made with the approval of the office of Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and is thought to mark the first time that Iraq has sent aid to the United States.

“He said the overthrow of dictator Saddam Hussein was ‘a blessing from God, and the U.S. was His tool.’"

“’. . .a blessing from God, and the U.S. was His tool.’"

If only Cindy Sheehan and demented to could hear clearly that statement. If only Nancy Pelosi and liberal colleagues in the US Congress could hear clearly that statement. If only the TV newsmakers could hear clearly that statement.

“’. . .a blessing from God, and the U.S. was His tool.’"

I am certain that US President George W. Bush and team have heard that statement gladly.

“The Red Crescent, which operates in Iraq much as the Red Cross does in the United States, says it has four of its original nine trucks left, the remainder having been stolen by terrorists to be sold or destroyed in clashes. One of its 12 ambulances was destroyed during fighting in Najaf.

“Since the overthrow of Saddam's regime in 2003, the Iraqi Red Crescent has been distributing an average of 46 truckloads of medicine, food and water across Iraq every month.

“The supplies come mainly from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Turkey and from some Christian organizations. National Red Cross societies and the International Red Cross also have sent supplies.

“The flow of trucks was quadrupled during the U.S. assault on rebel-held Fallujah late last year and during recent battles to end insurgent control of Tal Afar and Hadith.”

Do Iraqi freedom fighters give up? Obviously not. Can then the free world give up? Let’s hope not.
