JESSICA SIMPSON : HOW FAR A FALLEN BAPTIST  JESSICA SIMPSON : HOW FAR A FALLEN BAPTIST

J. Grant Swank, Jr.

Jessica and Ashlee Simpson were brought up in the typical Texan Southern Baptist home. Bible. Prayer. Worship. Clean living. Christian pals. Pictures of Jesus. Witnessing for Jesus. Church socials.

Their dad was the youth pastor for the local congregation.

All this even prompted Jessica to inform media once about the influence of her born again faith on her attitude toward life. She said, "My faith hasn’t just gotten me to where I’m at, because a lot of people are where I’m at. It’s made me happy with where I’m at."

But the more Jessica’s popularity stretched off the charts, much to her father’s managerial persistence, the less a Bible-carrying Baptist Jessica became. And the less her dad appeared like a Baptist youth minister.

In fact, the less the whole family became what they once were. It’s a sad scene for those who are genuine Christians looking on. But it’s happened before; and it will happen again. Nevertheless, every time a Christian youth goes astray from what used to be, it’s not a pretty picture, no matter how attractive the star on tabloid covers.

According to USMagazine, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey are no longer considered a married couple. It’s the holiday breakup this year. They jointly announced their separation with sweet words provided to make sure their sugary image remains intact.

But biblical Christians looking on at the couple over the past several years knew those two were not living what a born again life should be. Nor was their father, once model preacher to teen-agers.

I recall seeing the full clan in a TV Christmas show. Slowly the camera moved from face to face. There were the grandparents and aunts and uncles as well as the little children born to one relative or another. I thought, "If that’s not a picture of the Southern Baptist down-home family photo shoot, I don’t know what is."

One could just tell from the facial expressions that these were Bible-touting proud folk celebrating the success of Jessica and Nick. Yet I pondered: "What price they are all going to pay when that worldly marriage hits the wall."

There were all sorts of scandals afloat related to the famous twosome. Some may have been manufactured; but not all were fictitious. It appears as if some indeed were lived out in real-time and real-life. So now the split.

What does the once-preacher father think today? What does the Bible teacher mother think today? What do they consider their prancing, suggestive daughters to have become in the eyes of God today? Both Jessica and Ashlee are an embarrassment to the Christian testimony. They have created their own cancel-out of the born again life. What else is the spiritual public to conclude when incident after incident has walked across their biographies canceling out the Jesus walk?

Jessica was popular in her local Baptist church where dad worked with the teens in youth ministry. At 13, Jessica was singing at the church camp a special arrangement of "Amazing Grace." Soon afterward, Jessica started a tour with Christian young people, going to conferences singing such tunes as "True Love Waits."

One writer back then penned: "Jessica says she is part of a positive new breed of teenager and youths who welcome responsibility and propriety. In school, Jessica hung with a crowd that was popular and respected."

Coming forth with the positive thinking, clean living mantra, Jessica once said, "That's what I really wanted to come across in these songs, confidence. I wanted to show that with that inner strength and inner light, nothing is impossible."

So with that, nothing is impossible.

Nothing, including suggestive TV act-outs, nude photo shots, and a marriage breakup — a far cry from Christian youth conferences where she once was singing songs about salvation, Jesus and "True Love Waits." And the clan was once there, beaming all the way home that their pretty little thing was staying true to the gospel.
