Community in a Box Newsletter

A very big welcome to the first of what we hope will be many more Community in a Box (CIAB) newsletters. These newsletters will keep you up to date with improvements at Community in a Box, news on offers for community members, and all sorts of other pieces of community news.
We would also want to hear from you! Maybe you have a good CIAB story or a technical question that you would like to ask us. Send it in to us and we will publish some in our future newsletters. With your help we will develop the newsletter into an online magazine that’s all for and about you the members.

As this is the first newsletter it might be a good idea to tell you a little about us.
A small technology start-up company called Anderson Toomey Limited are the developers of Community in a Box. The company was founded by (surprise, surprise) a Mr Anderson and a Mr Toomey. Together George and Alistair wanted a product that would be so simple to use that everyone could share information and communicate simply and safely with each other over the Internet. We’re sure you noticed the word BETA next to the Community in a Box logo, it’s there because we are still developing Community in a Box. There is much more still to come; the shop and SMS (text messaging) for example. We are also continually making changes and improvements to some parts of the product that you may have noticed. We would like to say thank you to all of you that have sent in suggestions for improvements or for letting us know of fixes or problems that you have found, we are here to serve you so please keep your valuable help coming.

Community in a Box BETA has now been running since August 2006 and you’ll be interested to know that you are a member of a wide global community. CIAB members live all over the world from Australia and New Zealand to Europe and America and Canada. There is a full list of countries at the end of the newsletter and we will keep adding to this so you can watch it grow from the pioneering members we have now.
It is really exciting for us to see the world coming closer together through the use of Community in a Box. One interesting and heart warming comment we received not so long ago was “I find messaging on Community in a Box a much more personal way to communicate than email for keeping in touch with all my family. It is like being in a room together”. What better endorsement could a product that was developed to bring people closer together have? It’s Fantastic.

We are currently working hard to develop the shop on our site, hopefully in time for Christmas shopping. As well as developing the technical aspect of the shop we are currently vetting suppliers and testing the goods to stock. We need to have the shop and advertising revenue so that Community in a Box can remain completely free to join and use. Our advertisers are carefully selected too, so you can be confident that they provide good quality, price and customer service. If however you are unfortunate enough to experience a problem with anyone of our advertisers or suppliers then please get in touch with us with all the relevant details. We will endeavour to resolve any problems for you.

This coming Christmas you can support their important and urgent work by purchasing Christmas cards and gifts from them. ‘UNICEF helps children receive the support, healthcare and education they need to survive the threats of childhood poverty – such as preventable disease or malnutrition – and grow up to become healthy adults’.

Skype allows users to make free telephone calls over the infrastructure of the Internet. As well as telephone calls Skype technology also allows video calls, conference calls and instant messaging between users. Community in a Box is Skype compatible. This means that CIAB members can use Skype within their communities to keep in touch with each other at no charge. To use Skype with CIAB you will need to download the Skype software from their website and then enter your Skype user name into your CIAB profile. It’s as simple as that. We developed Community in a Box, we use it ourselves, but at the end of the day it is your Community in a Box so make it your own and spread the word. Remember your communities are private, anyone can start up a community but only invited members can gain access into your community.
