Deadly Household Cleansers: Keeping Your Children Safe With children in the home, your life is not the same. What you thought and did before in nothing like the journey you are on. People have told you so many things. Some you believed and some you thought differently.
Making your home safe for children is a job that takes a great deal of thought and preparation. You cannot be careful enough. If you think they could, they probably will. To keep one step ahead is a full time job.
There are things that can happen that you have no control over, But there are precautions that you can avoid a tragedy. Common sense is your best defense system. Let's put it to work.
Today we usually do not have the cleaning supplies our grandparents had to do the job necessary. They needed things like lye, bleach, and strong solvents. They had to boil a lot of things we put in the cloths washer. Times have changed. But children have not.
A cupboard or closet locked is ideal. It may be less convenient for you but safer for your child. Childproof locks on cupboards and drawers are essential. If they cannot get in then they cannot get hurt. This is your priority.
Many people are used to keeping the cleaners in the cabinet under the kitchen sink. My own mother did when I was a kid and I never drank the Windex or ate the Ajax, but that's me. Maybe I was lucky or maybe my parents somehow drove it home in my mind that those things are not for eating. Either way, if you leave your cleaners under the sink and don't secure the cabinet doors you are running a risk. Chances are very good that nothing bad will happen, but even if there is only a 5% chance your child will think the blue juice under the sink looks tasty, is that an acceptable risk? Considering how easy it is to avoid, for me it is not acceptable.
If you read the label on every product you buy you will realize how many things can harm your child. Hazardous chemicals in cleaners is obvious and extra caution needs to be taken. Our of sight, out of mind. But what about the things we do not think of. In our medicine cabinet, in our garage, in our bathroom and even our bedroom.
Your child needs to be monitored so they cannot get into those rooms. They will be able to open the door, they will be able to go up the stairs and down, they will be able to get into the basement and the garage. Do not think for a minute just because you say "no" that they will not do it. Never underestimate the power of a child to do what he wants regardless of the consequences.
