NAION: Common cause of sudden vision loss in older Americans

According to the National Eye Institute, 6000 people develop NAION each year. It is a condition, which leads to swelling around the optic disc. Optic disc is the connection point where the optic nerves reach the back of the eye. The swelling around the disc compresses the optic nerves and causes a rapid drop in vision. Blurry vision is the first symptom of NAION. The condition starts in one eye and cause complete blindness if both the eyes are affected.

Is Viagra the main cause of NAION?

A recent study conducted in seven men by Pomeranz, all developed NAION soon after they took Viagra. So, Pomeranz concluded, “the onset of vision loss within hours of taking Viagra supports an association between the use of this agent and NAION.”

A major loophole in Pomeranzs’ study was the elements other than Viagra, which led to NAION in 6000 people who died of it. Not all of them died after taking Viagra. So it’s inappropriate to conclude the definite causal relationship between Viagra and NAION.

NAION can be disabling if it affects both the eyes. Even with declining eyesight, most had better vision than when they were first afflicted with NAION. Researchers haven’t discovered a complete cure for the disorder yet.

The NAION risk

People with bad eyesight are susceptible to NAION. Those who are diabetic suffer from hypertension or high cholesterol seems to be at a risk as well. In a case study conducted on seven patients between the ages of 50 and 69, all seven of them had typical features of NAION, 36 hours after the Viagra intake.

All these patients had at least one arteriosclerotic risk factor, including hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, or hyperlipidemia, and they also had a low cup-to-disk ratio. Low cup-to-disk ratio means that the blood vessels and nerves are tightly bundled together into the small space in the back of the eye. Pomeranz says that it is this constriction of blood vessels, which promotes NAION.

Take precautions before using Viagra

• Men taking nitrate medications should not use Viagra. The two medications when combined can decrease blood pressure resulting in life threatening situations.
• Women and children should not use Viagra
• Viagra’s use in combination with other ED treatments has not been studied; therefore, its use in combination with other treatments is not recommended
