Trend Micro Partners With SINA To Provide Security Services to Largest Internet Portal in ChinaTrend Micro ( TSE:4704, NASDAQ:TMIC ), Inc., a worldwide leader in network antivirus and Internet content security software and services, today announced an agreement with SINA -- China’s top internet portal and most frequently visited Web site -- to provide advanced security protection for more than 100 million email users in China and the global Chinese community.

Trend Micro will provide a number of security services to SINA’s customers, beginning with email scanning services. In the near future, Trend Micro and SINA plan to introduce additional services to SINA’s customers, such as online virus scanning for PCs, antivirus security for mobile ( wireless ) devices, and anti-spam protection.

“Trend Micro acknowledges the importance of a secured Internet infrastructure for China,” said Eva Chen, CEO of Trend Micro. “Our vision is to create a world safe for exchanging digital information, and our partnership with SINA enables us to realize that vision in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies.”

In 2004, a survey conducted by the Ministry of Public Security in China revealed that nearly 88 percent of the country’s computers have been infected by at least one virus. In addition, a study by the Internet Society of China found that more than 60 percent of all email traffic was considered spam. Other threats, such as spyware and phishing scams, are becoming more prevalent as well.

With 101.2 million registered users worldwide and more than 12 million active users for a variety of fee-based services, SINA has become the most recognized Internet brand name in China and among Chinese communities worldwide. In 2003, SINA was ranked No.1 by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences as the most frequently visited Web site in China. SINA was also recognized by South China Weekend as the "Chinese Language Media of the Year".

“SINA will not only provide our users with diversified content, but also make it our responsibility to guarantee the security and reliability of that content so when users need network security services, SINA will always be their best choice,” said Wang Yan, CEO and president of SINA.

CEOs Chen and Yan will present more details about the partnership at a joint press event today in Beijing, China.

Trend Micro currently has sales, marketing, and research and development operations in Beijing, Shanghai, and Nanjing.
