Logistics Computer Services Selects Sun Microsystems To Manage Entire IT InfrastructureSun Microsystems, Inc. ( NASDAQ: SUNW ) today announced its first customer win, Logistics Computer Services, via the acquisition of SevenSpace, Sun's newly acquired heterogeneous remote management services arm. Upon engagement, Sun will take full responsibility for LCS' IT operations, which includes management of its help desk, desktops, network support, infrastructure, systems operations and database administration. LCS provides system time sharing, software and programming support for enterprises, as well as electronic data interchange ( EDI ) support to major automotive manufacturers. The deal is valued at $4.6 million over five years.

Sun will manage a heterogeneous IT environment that includes Solaris Operating System and technologies from Oracle and Microsoft. Sun will also craft a disaster recovery plan for the company that will serve as an operations framework for both the hardware and software infrastructure in the event of a disaster.

"The new reality of the market is that customers require vendors to manage their heterogeneous environments better than they can at reduced costs," said Eric Goodness, principal analyst at Gartner. "To meet these demands, more IT companies must leverage strategic partnerships to expand capabilities from simply monitoring their own technology to monitoring and managing technologies from several vendors."

"Sun's heterogeneous managed services offering was a key factor in our selection process," said Bill Kirkland, president of Logistics Computer Services. "We signed this managed services agreement with Sun in order to increase service levels, create a flexible operating environment to support internal growth, and achieve short and long term cost savings that will total over $1.3 million over the life of the contract. The acquisition of SevenSpace adds experience in infrastructure and help desk and is a great testament to the Sun strategy."

LCS chose Sun to manage its IT operations to increase service levels, lower operational costs and create a flexible operating environment that supports growth through acquisitions and new customers. After a thorough review, LCS selected Sun over competing vendors, as Sun offered a customized, unique plan to help LCS meet its goals. Sun's responsiveness and vision, as well as its commitment to becoming a true partner, was another deciding factor.

In addition to freeing up IT staff to handle other tasks, working with Sun will enable LCS to enhance network security. Sun will safeguard LCS' networks through its proactive approach to vulnerability management. If it detects vulnerabilities in the LCS network during daily internal and external network scans, Sun engineers will immediately notify LCS' security team. Additionally, Sun's rigorous management of LCS' change control processes will reduce errors and increase control over changes to all aspects of the company's system.
