Fusion Asian Cinema at Silver Lake Film Festival - March 2006Fusion Asian isn't wasabi on your mahi-mahi. This year's Fusion Asian Cinema program at the Silver Lake Film Festival 2006 includes eight features, seven documentaries, and five short films from nine countries. Each screen focuses on evolving Asian films that are blurring the lines of national borders within the transcultural wave. The enduring Asian cinematic classics, featuring martial arts and samurais, are crossing paths with contemporary cult genres such as horror and action. The unique aesthetics of Asian films are the result of both homage to and a rejection of Hollywood styles. As in the West, digital filmmaking is emerging as another tool to independent voices and has fueled media activism from China to India.
- March 24th: Retrospective - Nobuo Nakagawa, The Maestro of Japanese Horror films that influences the contemporary Japanese horror genre. The series is coming straight from the Berlin Film Festival and is the only day this film series will be shown in the U.S.
- March 25th: Cult Fusion, presenting a range of films blurring the lines of national borders within the transcultural wave.
- March 26th: Documentaries and Special Projects, presenting some of the brightest gems in Asian documentaries, and highlights with "Digital Shorts by Three Filmmakers" - Shinya Tsukamoto, Song Il-gong, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
The transcultural wave brings with it films that can be understood across languages and national borders, not only throughout Asia but also around the world. The universal language of the image makes these gems readily accessible to an American audience.
The program is curated by Erika Kao-Haley, and supported by prominent organizations including The Japan Foundation, the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center, the National Center for The Preservation of Democracy and Korean Cultural Center.
